Part 3 - After the Addin is installed, get a server account

Click this link to Get a server account

Part 4 - Add Widgets to start on your first dashboard!

From within Excel, click the menu item "Add Widget".

  • You can add add widgets to a new workbook, or to an existing workbook.
  • Pick a widget.
  • If it is Google Analytics (GA), choose an account, profile, and segment.
    • For GA, you can also choose dimensions and metrics.
    • If it is a widget that shows trend, be sure to pick one of the date Dimensions.
  • If it is Facebook, you can choose a Fan Page.
    • If the widget is for Insights, you must be Administrator of the page.
  • If you change the date range, you should expect to delete the chart and table and create your own visualization using cell references to the hidden data sheet. Inspect the formulas before you delete the sheet and you'll know the name of the worksheet to refer to.
  • Add as many widgets as you like.

When you want to see your data, click the menu item "Data Refresh".

Save your workbook, and you will have created your first dashboard that has Next Analytics widgets in it!

Appendix 1 - Protect Your Data (optional!)

At no time does Next Analytics ever see your passwords. When you authorize access, it is done by connecting straight to Google, Facebook and Twitter. By clicking the menu item Transfer account to local, we offer three buttons that take it a step further.

Get data from the server will make a copy of the authentication codes provided by Google, Facebook, and Twitter on your MAC.

Clear all remote data will erase the authentication data and any private data from the server. If you do this, You will not be able to Add Widgets and the Data Refresh will not work. You will have to do the next step first. Your account on the server will still exist but it will be empty.

Put data onto server will put a put copy of the authentication codesback into your server account. This will allow Data Refresh to function. It requires that you previously clicked Get data from server.

Appendix 2 - Can't find a widget that has the data you want? Then build a custom widget!

Click the menu item that says Create Widget and the following dialog appears:

mac-create-a-widget-opening-dialog

When you click Create Query, it shows you a link that you click to login. This provides a user interface for building a query that fetches data from your choice of Google Analytics or Facebook.

In Google Analytics, you can specify the Account and Profile and Segment.

  • You can choose dimensions which can be positioned on two axes for a pivoted view, or a single axis for a tabular view. You're allowed to pick up to 7 dimensions and 10 metrics at once.
  • You can specify a date range such as "Past 6 months" which always brings you data from the current moment at the time of the Data Refresh. The other popular option is LastCalendar, which starts from the most recent complete time period. For Europeans, the choice of MediaWeeks can be useful, since it starts the week on Monday.
  • You can create a segment and create a filter, and ask Google to sort the data before sending it.

In Facebook, you can specify the Facebook Fan Page ID or another object, depending on the query you are building.

  • If you are seeking Facebook Insights, you need to be administrator of the page you want to report on.
  • You can also specify a date range and Next Analytics will automatically go back in time to fetch you the historical data. See the date related comments in the previous section for detail.

At any time, you can run the query to see what the data looks like.

When you are satisfied with it, press the Save button and give the query a name. This will become the name of your widget so give it a good name.

Then return back to the Excel Dialog and click the button Get Queries. Your newly saved query will appear in the list box. In the example shown above, you can see that there was a query named "top products" already present.

To create a widget, click on the query and then click on the button Create Widget. Doing that creates two hidden worksheets and a visible worksheet that shows you how to access the data in the hidden worksheets.

Save this workbook in the Nextanalytics : Widgets folder with all the other widgets. By putting it there, the Add Widgets dialog will show it in the list of widgets.

As with all widgets, your new widget can have the Account, Profile, Fan Page, and date range changed when you add the widget to your dashboard.
